On December 3, 2023, the Special Victims Bureau (SVB) celebrated the 37th annual Christmas Wonderland event at STARS Center. The 999 for Kids program is a partnership between the Special Victims Bureau, the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) and the community to provide financial support to children who are victims of child abuse and neglect. The children who received a special invitation to the event are under the supervision of DCFS, in the Specialized Medical Placement and Deaf Services programs.
This year’s 999 for Kids event theme was inspired by the Mario Bros. movie. The STARS Center gymnasium and facility were decorated with thousands of balloons, Christmas trees and Mario Bros. props. Three hundred and forty-one children and their families were in attendance. The children received Christmas gifts, clothing and various items donated by local businesses, and a special meal from McDonald’s.
The event hosted a petting zoo, a snowy winter playground, Santa’s Village, face painting, and arts and crafts, as well as photos with Mr. and Mrs. Claus for a joyful and memorable experience for the children and family guests. Christmas dancers and carolers also performed to enhance the Christmas atmosphere.
We want to extend thanks to our partners at DCFS, SVB personnel, our Explorers and all LASD sworn and civilian volunteers who made this special day magical. Special thanks to the LASD Grizzlies and POPA Federal Credit Union for their generous donations to our cause. Also, a big thank-you to the Facilities Services Bureau team for building a new Santa’s Village for this year’s phenomenal event. The selfless dedication and the hours invested have not only enhanced LASD’s ability to serve, but have also left an indelible mark on the individuals and communities we aim to assist.
Seeing the holiday joys and smiles on the faces of families and children at the event makes all the hard work more worthwhile. Guests are grateful and appreciative for the Christmas gifts and a memorable day. At Special Victims Bureau and through the 999 for Kids program, we want to make a positive difference in these children’s lives. This event is beneficial in helping the vision become a reality.
