This year marks a significant milestone as we celebrate the 38th anniversary of the “999 for Kids” Program, a remarkable initiative that embodies the spirit of community support for children who have endured the unimaginable pain of child abuse. In a powerful collaboration between Special Victims Bureau, the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), and our dedicated community, the program continues to provide essential financial resources that go beyond basic needs, truly making a difference in the lives of these vulnerable children.
From July 1 to August 15, 2024, we hosted this year’s “999 for Kids” Pledge Drive, inviting partners across various units to join in our mission to uplift the lives of the children we serve. The efforts of all involved resulted in a heartwarming total of $52,059.75 raised, a testament to the generosity and compassion of those who contribute to this noble cause. These funds will directly benefit children in the Specialized Medical Placement and Deaf Services Unit, bringing hope and comfort to those who need it most.
Highlighting the community spirit, our Annual Ice Cream Social took place on August 22, 2024, at the Liberty Community Plaza in Whittier. This cherished event is a wonderful opportunity for the Law Enforcement Community to connect with the children we support. It was a day filled with laughter, joy, and heartwarming interactions that foster friendships and build confidence in the children and their families. The smiles on their faces as they participated in activities and captured memories with our sworn personnel were simply priceless.
During the event, we proudly recognized our 2024 Poster Child, Sudara, alongside previous Poster Children, Isaih (2023) and Allan (2022). We also celebrated the creativity and talent of our young participants with the Art Awards and Scholarships. Special Victims Bureau’s Captain Richard Ruiz, the dedicated Chairperson of the “999 for Kids” Program, was a distinguished speaker at the event. Assistant Sheriff Myron Johnson delivered an inspiring address and presented the Art and Scholarship awards, taking the time to pose for photographs with our Poster Child and award recipients.
A special congratulations goes to Ernesto Rodriguez, the 2024 Artwork Winner, whose creation was beautifully replicated onto plaques for our generous donors. Moreover, we are thrilled to announce this year’s Scholarship recipients from DCFS Special Medical Housing: Itzel Ochoa Estrada, Luis Solis, Melina Barba Perez, Nathaly Guadron Gomez, Teodoro Lopez, and Sara Soto. Their hard work and determination truly deserve this recognition.
Dr. Edward Liao, Medical Director of the Department of Children and Family Services, expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the program, sharing inspiring stories that illustrate its positive impact. Deanne Tilton Durfee, Executive Director of the Inter-Agency Council on Child Abuse and Neglect (ICAN), also conveyed her appreciation for the ongoing work of the “999 for Kids” Program.
A special shout-out goes to San Dimas Station and Court Services East for being the top two LASD units contributing the most significant donations this year. We also extend our sincere gratitude to the L.A. Grizzlies Football and POPA Federal Credit Unit for their remarkable contributions.
As we reflect on the impact of the “999 for Kids” Program, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the units and organizations that participated in the pledge drive. Your continued support and compassion for these children empowers them to heal and thrive. Together, we are creating a safer and brighter future for those who need it most. Thank you for being part of this incredible journey!
